History

The area known today as "The Colony" came into being as Peters Colony in the 1840s.  A combination of English and American empresarios petitioned the Republic of Texas for land grants to begin a new colony. They could attract fewer settlers than the contract called for, so they sold the land management company to another group that attracted settlers at a higher rate. This caused an uproar that ended up in court with the result that those living in The Colony TX homes got their fair share. Peters Colony, so named for one of its founders, attracted over 1,800 settlers. The railroad came through in the early 1900s and then the Army Corps of Engineers formed Lake Lewisville in the 1950s. The Colony absorbed Eastvale, a community on the lake, in 1987. Present-day The Colony is a planned community, built to resemble Dallas, except in "colony" form.
